In front of a fervent crowd of over 25,000 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Pakistan faced a formidable task after Sri Lanka posted 344 to chase. The responsibility fell on Abdullah Shafique, stepping up in place of the out-of-form Fakhar Zaman, as Pakistan lost both Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq early.

However, Mohammad Rizwan, the constant guiding force, anchored the innings. He came to the crease in the 8th over, initially experiencing a near miss off his fifth delivery, and settled in. As Shafique opened up on the other end, Rizwan played a pivotal role by providing stability and rotating the strike effectively. He displayed a fabulous knock, finishing unbeaten on 131, comprising 57 singles, 10 doubles, eight fours, and three sixes.

Shafique’s dismissal in the 34th over, caught brilliantly by substitute fielder Dushan Hemantha, marked a turning point in the match. At that juncture, Pakistan needed 132 runs for victory, with the required run rate hovering around 8 runs per over. Rizwan then took charge, delivering clutch shots, including a stunning cover drive and a six off Dhanajaya de Silva. Despite briefly hobbling with a hamstring issue, Rizwan fought through the pain and reached his century in just 40 balls, marking his third ODI hundred.

With Saud Shakeel’s valuable support, the duo added 95 runs off 68 balls, effectively sealing the game for Pakistan. Iftikar Ahmed contributed the finishing touches as Pakistan achieved their second-highest successful ODI chase, securing a memorable victory. Rizwan’s stellar performance solidified his reputation as a dependable anchor in high-pressure situations.
