Afghanistan’s historic World Cup triumph against Pakistan is poised to create a far-reaching impact in Afghan cricket and serve as an inspirational beacon for aspiring players, according to Coach Jonathan Trott.

Jonathan Trott, Afghanistan’s coach, believes that the landmark World Cup victory against Pakistan is set to trigger a profound transformation in Afghan cricket, providing inspiration to aspiring players. In a methodical pursuit of the 283-run target, Afghan batters focused on singles and doubles, effectively handling the pressure, ultimately winning the match with eight wickets and six balls to spare. This victory marked their second win in five games and their third-ever World Cup triumph.

Notably, it was Afghanistan’s first victory over Pakistan in eight One Day International (ODI) matches and their first World Cup win when chasing against a Test-playing nation. Trott expressed, “This will have a great ripple effect. I want to make sure that the players remember that game in Chennai when we chased down 283 against Pakistan and pass it on.”

Trott particularly emphasized the significance of the 130-run opening partnership between Rehmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87), considering it the “turning point.” He commended Rahmat Shah, who played through cramps to steady the game after the openers’ dismissal. Trott was particularly impressed by Shah’s shot selection, which included a crucial straight six that he described as breaking the back of the game. Shah remained unbeaten at 77, with 45 runs coming from singles and doubles.

This victory, along with the previous triumph over defending champions England on October 15, propelled Afghanistan from the bottom of the table to the sixth position, with a match against ninth-place Sri Lanka scheduled for the following Monday. Trott encouraged the players to savor these victories but also maintain their focus and confidence as they looked ahead to the match against Sri Lanka in Pune.
