In Chennai, Mitchell Marsh’s World Cup opener blunder left his Australian fans disappointed. Known for his recent stellar performances, Marsh was expected to shine, even being considered as a potential permanent captain for Australia. However, in the match against World Cup hosts India at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, everything went wrong for him.

Marsh was dismissed for a six-ball duck as Virat Kohli made an exceptional catch at slip off Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery. Australia struggled to post a below-par total of 199, but their bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, fought back fiercely.

In an unusual turn of events, three of India’s top four batters fell for a duck in a One Day International (ODI) match, and Hazlewood had another opportunity when Kohli mistimed a pull shot. However, Marsh’s attempt to catch the ball was disrupted by wicketkeeper Alex Carey approaching from the other side, resulting in a missed chance.

Kohli went on to score 85 runs, forming a match-winning partnership of 165 runs with KL Rahul, who remained unbeaten with 97 runs. Hazlewood defended Marsh, stating that it was his catch and the proximity of Carey may have affected the catch. Such incidents are part of the game, and players work hard to hold on to such chances.

While the mistake led to memes on social media, Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, showed support for Marsh, stating that he had already moved on from it. Despite the missed opportunity, India secured a six-wicket victory with 52 balls remaining. Australia will face South Africa in their next match, looking to bounce back in the tournament.
