India Opener Shubman Gill Hospitalized in Chennai Due to Dengue Fever and Low Platelet Count After a Week-Long Battle

Shubman Gill, the opening batsman for Team India, has been hospitalized in Chennai due to dengue fever, as reported on Tuesday. Gill, currently ranked as the World No. 2 ODI batter, has been battling dengue since the Indian cricket team’s arrival in Chennai ahead of their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Australia on Sunday.

According to information from the Cricbuzz website, Gill’s platelet count has been consistently low, preventing him from traveling with the team to New Delhi, where India is set to face Afghanistan in their second World Cup 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. The team management received medical advice to avoid air travel when the platelet count is low, leading to Gill’s absence from the Delhi game, as confirmed by a statement from the BCCI on Monday.

Gill was admitted to Kaveri Hospital on Monday morning and is currently under the care of medical specialists. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doctor accompanying the team, is also tending to the young opener, who missed India’s first World Cup game against Australia on Sunday. Since the team’s arrival in Chennai on October 4, only a limited number of team members have visited Gill, with physicians from Kaveri Hospital conducting blood tests and monitoring his platelet count at the team hotel.

Gill’s availability for the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday at the Narendra Modi Stadium remains uncertain. His absence was keenly felt on Sunday night, and there is hope within the team management that he may recover in time to participate against their arch-rivals, particularly given his outstanding performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium during his time with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Inside sources suggest that Gill could be discharged to return to the hotel if his health improves. If his condition takes a positive turn, he might be able to fly directly to Ahmedabad and rejoin the squad.
