In the opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023, Bangladesh emerged victorious with a convincing six-wicket win over Afghanistan. Star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a pivotal role, contributing both with the ball and the bat.

Mehidy’s exceptional performance saw him claim three wickets for just 25 runs in his bowling spell. He then showcased his prowess with the bat, scoring a brilliant fifty. His partnership with the in-form Najmul Shanto, who also notched up a fifty, proved to be instrumental in Bangladesh’s successful chase of the 157-run target. Captain Shakib Al Hasan also played a crucial role in the team’s triumph.

The match began with Shakib winning the toss and opting to field first at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium. Afghanistan’s openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, started positively, forming a 47-run partnership. However, Mustafizur Rahman provided the breakthrough by dismissing Ibrahim in the ninth over, and Afghanistan’s innings soon crumbled.

Rahmanullah was the top-scorer with 47 runs, and Ibrahim contributed 22 runs. However, the rest of Afghanistan’s batting lineup struggled against Bangladesh’s spin attack. Shakib and Mehidy both claimed three wickets each, while Shoriful Islam took two, ultimately restricting Afghanistan to just 156 runs in 37.2 overs.

In their pursuit of the modest target, Bangladesh faced some early setbacks, losing opener Tanzid Hasan to a run-out in the fifth over. Star batter Litton Das continued his poor form, managing only 13 runs before being bowled out by a sensational delivery from pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi in the seventh over.

After their initial challenges, Mehidy and Najmul Shanto took control, forming a remarkable 97-run partnership for the third wicket. Both players reached impressive half-centuries, ensuring a comfortable six-wicket victory for Bangladesh with 92 balls to spare. Mehidy’s all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
