In the opening ODI, the West Indies’ resistance against Australia’s T20 dominance faded dramatically. Without their superstar captain Hayley Matthews, the home team crushed the lackluster Windies at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. Australian bowler Kim Garth’s astonishing figures of 3-8 from less than six overs saw the Windies bundled out for a mere 83, their lowest ODI total since 2017.

Australia swiftly chased down the target in under 15 overs, securing an eight-wicket victory. The only setback was speedster Darcie Brown’s hamstring injury after an outstanding performance.

The Windies struggled without Matthews, losing two wickets before scoring a run off the bat. They reached their first run in the fifth over and only crossed the 10-run mark in the 10th over, courtesy of a boundary, but were already three wickets down at 3-5.

Despite their earlier T20 success, the Windies failed to put up a fight without Matthews, eventually collapsing in the 28th over with four ducks on their batting card. Australian spinners Ash Gardner (2-17) and Georgia Wareham (2-30) were among the wicket-takers.

Australia’s strong batting lineup made easy work of the modest target, with skipper Alyssa Healy (38 runs off 26 balls) and Ellyse Perry (20 not out off 13 balls) sealing the victory with back-to-back boundaries.

One-day victories have been hard to come by for Australia recently, with losses in two out of three 50-over games during the Ashes in England. However, their decade-long ODI dominance over the West Indies continued, as the Windies haven’t beaten Australia in the format since 2013, with only one victory in 16 50-over clashes.
