Zion Williamson’s preseason journey with the New Orleans Pelicans has been quite the rollercoaster. He marked a solid return against the Orlando Magic on Tuesday, showcasing his talents after nine months of recovery from a hamstring injury. In his debut, the two-time All-Star contributed 12 points in 15 minutes, alongside five rebounds and five assists. However, his second preseason game against the Houston Rockets wasn’t as smooth. Williamson struggled, scoring just four points in 22 minutes, with four rebounds and one assist. His limited attempts (only three field goals) and somewhat sluggish performance were expected given his extended absence.

Considering his history of injuries, the New Orleans Pelicans might opt to rest Williamson when they face the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday during their trip to Atlanta. Coach Willie Green emphasized the paramount importance of Williamson’s health, with the team’s primary focus on ensuring he’s ready for the season opener on October 24.

During their lopsided loss to the Houston Rockets, the Pelicans failed to involve Williamson effectively. His three field-goal attempts in 22 minutes fell short of what’s needed for him to thrive. Williamson received fewer opportunities than other starters, with CJ McCollum leading the charge with 13 shot attempts. Jonas Valanciunas and Herbert Jones also outpaced him in field-goal attempts. The coaching staff should aim to get their star power forward more involved, as much of the focus was on Brandon Ingram and McCollum, leaving “Zanos” looking somewhat lethargic. His screening and defensive rotations were at times lackluster, potentially due to limited touches during the game.
