Over 13,000 fans attend the Spurs practice session.

San Antonio (AFP) – A crowd of over 13,000 gathered at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Saturday to witness Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs engage in an intra-squad training game as part of their preparations for the upcoming NBA season.

It’s been a long time since I’ve played in front of so many people, remarked Wembanyama, the 19-year-old French sensation selected as the number one pick in the NBA draft by the Spurs.

He added, “Of course, it’s even more meaningful when it’s the fan base of the franchise I’ve been following since I was a child.” Wembanyama is considered a generational talent, and he expressed his aspiration to reach the playoffs in his debut NBA season.

In a casual mini-game spanning four 10-minute periods and featuring San Antonio players, Wembanyama contributed nine points and five rebounds, earning cheers from the 13,200-strong crowd in attendance.

The Spurs are set to commence their season against the Dallas Mavericks on October 25 and will initiate their pre-season matches on Monday against the Thunder in Oklahoma City.

While Wembanyama remains focused on his own season preparations, he was questioned on Saturday regarding Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid’s recent announcement. Embiid revealed on Thursday that he had committed to representing the United States at the Paris Olympics next year, despite being eligible to play internationally for Cameroon or France.

Wembanyama expressed sadness for Cameroon but refrained from sharing further opinions, stating, “If I’m selected, I’ll go and compete alongside fellow Frenchmen to pursue a championship.
