AT A GLANCE

With this achievement, Cone has finally put to rest the painful memory of not securing the gold medal when he first took charge of the Philippine team back in the 1998 edition held in Bangkok.

HANGZHOU, China – Gilas coach Tim Cone now feels completely relieved of that pain.

In the most significant game of all, the Philippine National Basketball Team executed a flawless performance on both ends of the court, clinching a thrilling 70-60 victory over Jordan to secure the coveted gold medal. This historic moment unfolded on Friday, October 6, at the 19th Asian Games held at Hangzhou Olympic Stadium in China.

For Coach Tim Cone, this triumph finally laid to rest the painful memory of not winning gold when he first led the Philippine team in the 1998 edition held in Bangkok.

It’s incredibly satisfying,” he expressed moments after his team secured their first gold medal since 1962. In the 1998 Bangkok edition, the team suffered an 82-73 defeat at the hands of the Chinese in the semifinals. Cone reflected, “I was devastated in 1998 when we fell short. However, coming back 25 years later and enduring the ups and downs, I believed I could handle it much better this time.”

Messages of good luck from former players Kenneth Duremdes and Johnny Abarrtientos, whom Cone had coached during his time with Alaska in the PBA, provided an extra boost of motivation prior to their crucial semifinal match against China.

The long-awaited victory allowed Cone, a highly accomplished and respected coach, to finally relax before the next PBA conference begins next season.

Their mission was accomplished.

Coach Tim and I promised to bring the gold back to the Philippines, and we did it,” beamed Alfrancis Chua, San Miguel Corp. Sports Director and Gilas team manager, after the team’s historic win in front of thousands of ecstatic home fans.

Indeed, it was a mission accomplished.
