Weatherspoon, a distinguished member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, made her mark in collegiate basketball at Louisiana Tech, contributing to the Lady Techsters’ victory in the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship in 1988. Following this, she embarked on an illustrious career, joining the New York Liberty in 1997 after a successful stint with various European teams in Russia, Italy, and France.

Throughout her WNBA career, Weatherspoon garnered numerous accolades, including being named a 2x Defensive Player of the Year, 5x All-Star, and 2x Steals Champion. Her contributions to the sport were further recognized with selections to the 15th and 20th Anniversary teams.

The accomplished former basketball player has earned prestigious spots in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (2010), Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2019), and LA Tech Athletic Hall of Fame (1995).

Weatherspoon took the reins as head coach at her alma mater from 2009 to 2014. Subsequently, she joined the Pelicans as an assistant coach in 2020, forging strong bonds with players in New Orleans, particularly the standout power forward, Zion Williamson.

Chicago Sky brought Weatherspoon on board to lead a team that posted an 18-22 record in 2023 under the guidance of head coaches James Wade (7-9) and Emre Vatansever (11-13). In the 2023 WNBA Playoffs, the reigning 2022 champions, the Las Vegas Aces, dominated the Sky with a 2-0 sweep. It was under James Wade’s leadership that Chicago clinched the 2021 WNBA Finals.

Zion Williamson attributes much of his growth and resilience during challenging times to Weatherspoon. Affectionately known as T-Spoon, she now has the opportunity to rejuvenate the Chicago Sky franchise.
