Former PBA import Paul Harris expressed his admiration for naturalized player Justin Brownlee, attributing his contributions to Gilas Pilipinas’ long-awaited gold medal victory in basketball at the Asian Games, a milestone that had eluded the Philippines for over six decades.

Taking to Instagram in a heartfelt post, Harris underscored the qualities that have endeared Brownlee to Filipino fans and made him one of the most beloved imports in the

history of the PBA. Harris, who was replaced by Brownlee as Ginebra’s import in 2016, specifically praised Brownlee’s off-court demeanor, his genuine affection for the Filipino community and its fans, and his unwavering dedication to the country.

Harris acknowledged that while there may have been imports with superior talent on paper, some of them allowed success to go to their heads, ultimately limiting their longevity in the PBA. He observed that, over the years, numerous players from abroad came to the Philippines and put up astonishing scoring figures but fell short of achieving

long-term success because they couldn’t handle the pressures and expectations. Harris added, “Many players overlook the importance of adapting to the culture and environment of the country they’re playing in, but Justin quickly excelled at it.

Harris also mentioned his own stint with the Gin Kings in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup, where he was initially set to lead the team but had to step down due to a thumb fracture. This unforeseen circumstance led to the arrival of Justin Brownlee as his replacement, marking the beginning of an impactful journey for both Brownlee and Philippine basketball.

This is where Brownlee made his mark

Some may claim I brought Justin to the Philippines, but that’s not the whole story. It was God who brought Justin to the Philippines. His pivotal role in Ginebra’s 2016 championship win, ending a long drought, and his subsequent string of victories stand as a testament to his relentless commitment and hard work,” stated Harris.

As someone who has cherished the Philippines since 2011 when I first set foot in this country, witnessing Justin lead the Philippines to gold in the Asian Games fills me with immense joy. Justin, I hold you in high regard, and I send my best wishes and blessings your way! 🇵🇭🏀 #PhilippinesBasketball.
