The Arizona Diamondbacks faced a dismal performance in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Their lackluster defense was overpowered by a surging Phillies lineup.

Earning their spot in the NL’s prominent series with back-to-back sweeps, the D-backs triumphed over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Wild Card Series and then swiftly eliminated the Los Angeles Dodgers in three straight games during the NL Division Series. Throughout these five games, they presented themselves as a precise unit with a potent offense and reliable defense.

However, their fortunes took a turn on Wednesday night, as a sequence of mishaps unfolded on the field. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with Ryne Nelson pitching, Bryson Stott stepped up for his turn at bat. On a 0-1 count, Stott popped up a ball just a short distance from the batter’s box.

Three Diamondbacks fielders attempted to seize the ball’s trajectory, yet none of them – not Nelson himself, catcher Gabriel Moreno, nor third baseman Evan Longoria – managed to make the catch. The ball landed just inside the foul territory line.

Stott reached first base, and Alec Bohm, already on first base, advanced to second. Both players crossed the plate as J.T. Realmuto delivered an RBI single, followed by Nick Castellanos’ sacrifice fly.

The blunder ultimately cost the D-backs two more runs. Disappointed fans voiced their frustration on X, formerly known as Twitter.
