On Saturday, the first of the two German Football League semifinals will unfold, featuring the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (1) playing host to the Dresden Monarchs (2).

The Unicorns initiated their postseason with a 17-7 triumph against the Berlin Rebels. Despite the apparent ease of the victory, the reigning champions had some room for improvement, allowing the Rebels to score only in the closing minutes.

In the 2021 German Bowl, the Monarchs emerged victorious against the Unicorns with a final score of 28-19.

In terms of offense, the Unicorns displayed a subpar performance, only reaching the endzone once and not accomplishing this until the second half. Their sole other touchdown was courtesy of Deshaun Paper’s pick-six early in the game. Ian Gehrke completed 13 of 20 passes with two interceptions, tallying just 142 yards in the air. Meanwhile, Mike Gentilli once again carried the bulk of the workload, rushing 23 times for 83 yards.

Where the Unicorns truly shone, and have excelled throughout the year, is on the defensive front. They hold the top spot in fumbles recovered, defensive interceptions, defensive touchdowns, and sacks, all while allowing just under 20 points per game, securing them a solid third place in the league rankings.

The Monarchs enter this matchup on the back of a substantial victory, besting the Saarland Hurricanes 45-38. As always, their offensive charge led by Steven Duncan was nearly flawless, amassing 480 yards and 45 points. Players like Joe Cassidy and Hugo Dyrendahl anchored the Monarchs’ defense, each making seven tackles, though there’s room for improvement as a unit in the second half. Despite taking a 31-16 lead in the first half, Dresden let the game evolve into a high-scoring affair, allowing the Hurricanes to stay in contention until the final moments.

This Saturday, the GFL’s leading offense will face off against one of the league’s top defensive teams in a fierce battle for a spot in the 2023 German Bowl.
