Little Astonishment Among the NFL's Leading Teams at the Quarter Mark of the Season

The NFL’s top preseason contenders have largely lived up to expectations in the first quarter of the season.

Teams like defending champions Kansas City (3-1), Philadelphia (4-0), San Francisco (40)Dallas (3-1), and Buffalo (3-1) have collectively boasted a remarkable 17-3 record. These performances have reaffirmed the belief that these teams are indeed the formidable contenders they were anticipated to be.

However, among the six teams that entered the season with the best Super Bowl odds, the Cincinnati Bengals (1-3) are the only ones who haven’t met expectations. Their struggles are primarily attributed to Joe Burrow’s injury, limiting the performance of the NFL’s highest-paid player.

Nonetheless, if Burrow can recover and lead the Bengals effectively, they should not be underestimated, considering their recent road playoff victories against formidable opponents like Kansas City and Buffalo.

Many of these frontrunning teams have managed to secure wins despite not consistently showcasing their best football.

For instance, the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly escaped with a 23-20 victory over the New York Jets, with their only loss coming against the Detroit Lions (3-1) in the season opener, a game played without key players like Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. Patrick Mahomes had one of his lower passer ratings but made critical plays when needed.

The Philadelphia Eagles needed overtime to clinch a 34-31 win over the Washington Commanders. Despite their undefeated record, the Eagles are still working to find their rhythm, with their passing attack taking time to click and their defense showing inconsistencies.

The Buffalo Bills, after an opening loss to the Jets, have won three consecutive games, including a convincing 48-20 win over the previously unbeaten Miami Dolphins (3-1). They sent a clear message that they remain the dominant force in the AFC East.

The Dallas Cowboys, following a surprising loss to Arizona, secured a commanding 38-3 victory over the New England Patriots, marking the worst loss in Bill Belichick’s career. Although the Cowboys have outscored opponents significantly, their offense is still striving to reach its full potential.

The San Francisco 49ers pulled away from the Arizona Cardinals in a 35-16 victory. Brock Purdy remains unbeaten when starting and finishing games without injury. The 49ers’ offense is complemented by standout performances from Christian McCaffrey, and their defense has been resolute.

In the coming week, the Cowboys are set to face the 49ers, promising an exciting matchup.

Notably, the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers also boast 3-1 records, while the Seattle Seahawks have the opportunity to match that start with a win over the New York Giants on Monday night.
