As we anticipate the 2024 NFL Draft, it’s intriguing to explore mock drafts. Keep in mind, though, that player rankings fluctuate significantly throughout the college football season and the draft process. Nevertheless, it’s exciting to speculate about who might be available when the 49ers make their selection.

In this recent two-round mock draft by Draft Wire, there’s an interesting twist – the 49ers are Super Bowl champions and hold the last pick in the draft. This is a departure from their usual late 20s, 30th, or 31st overall positions.

With the 32nd overall pick, the 49ers target cornerback assistance, choosing Wake Forest’s Caelen Carson. Draft Wire describes him as a “press-man specialist who tracks the football well and isn’t shy about contact.” This aligns with the 49ers’ cornerback preferences. Given their thin secondary and lack of long-term solutions at the position, a cornerback in the first round makes perfect sense.

In the second round at pick No. 64, the 49ers address their offensive tackle needs by selecting Washington’s Troy Fautanu. Fautanu earned Third-Team All-Pac 12 honors in 2022, starting all 13 games for the Huskies. He played left tackle for 12 games and also filled in at left guard, demonstrating valuable guard-tackle versatility throughout his college career, making him an appealing prospect for the 49ers.

Depending on the performance of right tackle Colton McKivitz as the season progresses, it wouldn’t be surprising if the team considers targeting an offensive tackle earlier in the draft to solidify the position for the future.
