SMU Triumphs in AAC Opener, Defeating Charlotte.

In Dallas, Texas, Charlotte fell behind 14-0 to SMU early but mounted a second-half comeback before succumbing to the Mustangs, 34-16, in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. This marked Charlotte’s inaugural game in the AAC.

Head coach Biff Poggi acknowledged the team’s effort but took responsibility for the mistakes, stating, “The kids fought really hard, I just have to do a better job coaching them.” He emphasized the need for improvement.

After SMU scored on their first two possessions, Charlotte’s defense tightened, forcing a punt, field goal, and turnover on SMU’s final three drives before halftime. The 49ers added a field goal to trail 17-3 at halftime.

SMU extended their lead to 27-3 in the second half before Charlotte staged a comeback. The 49ers scored back-to-back touchdowns, narrowing the gap to 27-16 with 6:23 remaining, but SMU’s late touchdown sealed the victory.
