NFL Journey Irvin Charles Makes an Impact for the Jets

It was a dream come true for Irvin Charles when he sprinted down the field on the first regular-season play of his NFL career, crashing into Denver punt returner Marvin Mims Jr., forcing a fumble that Samuel Eguavoen recovered deep in Broncos territory. The New York Jets capitalized on this game-changing moment and secured a 31-21 victory, thanks to Charles’s immediate impact.

But this story of success was far from immediate for the 26-year-old Charles. He had faced numerous frustrations and setbacks along the way.

“There have been a lot of frustrations and ups and downs,” Charles explained. “I’ve just been making sure I stayed the course. It’s a good feeling, but now I got a little taste, and I want more. It just added a little more fire to the fuel, I’d say.”

Elevated from the practice squad just a day before the game to replace the injured Brandin Echols on special teams, Charles’s performance was exceptional. Coach Robert Saleh, who had previously referred to Charles as “an absolute wolf” on special teams, seized the opportunity to get him in the game.

However, Charles’s journey to this point has been a long one. Despite growing up in Sicklerville, N.J., not far from MetLife Stadium, he faced challenges that led him on a winding path. From his early days at Paul VI High School, where he switched from defensive line to wide receiver and idolized Brandon Marshall, to his time at Penn State, Charles had his share of ups and downs. Although he showed promise as a four-star recruit at Penn State, he was primarily a special teamer and faced off-field issues that led to his dismissal from the team.

Charles took a step back, focusing on his life outside of football, before eventually transferring to Division II IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania). Even there, he faced academic challenges, which eventually led him to complete his degree back at Penn State before returning to IUP to resume playing football in 2021.

Charles’s journey has been one of personal growth and persistence, and his hard work paid off when he caught the attention of NFL scouts and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets. Despite facing setbacks, he continued to hone his skills and prove himself, earning a spot on the practice squad and, ultimately, his first NFL career start.

Charles’s experience serves as a reminder that life’s twists and turns can shape an individual’s character and provide valuable lessons. His determination to stay the course and his journey from Penn State to IUP to the NFL make his story one of resilience and unwavering commitment.
