The NFL is considering further delaying in-person interviews for head coaching candidates, with owners set to vote on the proposal next week in New York. If passed, teams would be prohibited from in-person interviews with coaches from other clubs until after the divisional round of the playoffs. Virtual interviews with candidates under contract, in-person interviews with those not employed by other teams, and interviews with in-house candidates would still be allowed. The move aims to address concerns about the postseason interview process affecting ongoing team commitments and leading to rushed decisions. While the outcome is uncertain, there is historical support for such delays to enhance the hiring process. Last year, the league disclosed that teams collectively spent $800 million over five years on fired coaches and executives. Five teams hired new head coaches in the previous offseason, with the Carolina Panthers being the first to make a hire 18 days after the regular season’s conclusion.
