In Jacksonville, Florida, Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke has been promoted to the active roster of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

On Wednesday, the NFL team announced the signing of the Victoria native from the practice squad to the active roster, a move that comes in the wake of starter Trevor Lawrence’s left knee injury during the team’s 37-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday.

With Jacksonville leading the AFC South with a 4-2 record, they are scheduled to play the New Orleans Saints (3-3) on Thursday night. Lawrence’s availability for the upcoming game remains uncertain, despite the quarterback expressing earlier this week that he was hopeful about his chances of playing on a short week.

Rourke, standing at six-foot-one and weighing 210 pounds, joined Jacksonville as a free agent on January 6, following two seasons with the CFL’s B.C. Lions. During the Jaguars’ exhibition schedule, he completed 23 of 35 passes for 348 yards and a touchdown before being placed on waivers and subsequently joining the practice roster.

In 2022, Rourke earned recognition as the CFL’s top Canadian, showcasing an impressive performance by completing 255 of 324 passes (78.7 percent) for 3,349 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in 10 regular-season starts. His capabilities were not limited to passing, as the former Ohio star also demonstrated his agility by rushing 39 times for 304 yards with seven touchdowns, maintaining an average of 7.8 yards per carry.

During his college career at Ohio from 2017 to 2019, Rourke showcased his talent by amassing 7,457 passing yards and 60 touchdowns, guiding the Bobcats to three consecutive bowl victories. His outstanding performance in the NCAA ranks led to him receiving the Jon Cornish Trophy twice, in 2017 and 2018, as the top Canadian football player.

The Lions selected Rourke as the 15th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 CFL draft. He commenced his professional career in Canada the following year, as the league didn’t hold a 2020 season due to the global pandemic.
