Jerry Palm’s Top Betting Choices for the Upcoming Week

Week 8 presents intriguing matchups, with several games featuring ranked teams from the SEC and Big Ten. Last week saw No. 18 USC and No. 9 Oregon lose their undefeated status, but the consequences differ for each squad. Oregon’s loss in a conference clash against Washington may have left the Ducks with little room for error in the Pac-12 title race. Meanwhile, despite their loss to Notre Dame, the Trojans retain their unblemished record in Pac-12 play and control their destiny in the conference championship chase.

Another undefeated team is bound to stumble this week as No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 6 Penn State in a pivotal Big Ten showdown. The ACC is the only other conference with multiple unbeaten teams: Florida State and North Carolina. Notably, the Seminoles and Tar Heels won’t cross paths during the regular season.

Every week, I take this opportunity to share my top picks for the upcoming weekend. Additionally, I provide an “upset of the week,” highlighting a team that’s an underdog by at least a touchdown but is my pick to win outright. Furthermore, I’ll offer predictions for other games involving potential College Football Playoff contenders. At this stage of the season, any major conference team that hasn’t suffered two losses still possesses CFP potential. Therefore, I’ll stick with the current top 12 teams in the AP Top 25 rankings.

Last week, I went 2-1 with my regular picks, improving my season record to 12-6. The upset special is still searching for its first successful prediction, but I have a strong sense that this week could be different, which is not always the case.

Week 8 Predictions

Michigan vs. Michigan State: In this classic rivalry showdown, No. 2 Michigan is a heavy favorite at -24.5 points against Michigan State. The Wolverines have been an unstoppable force, dominating their opponents week after week, with their last three victories coming by an impressive margin of 50-8. It’s difficult to envision the Spartans putting up a strong enough fight to match Michigan’s intensity. Prediction: Michigan -24.5

South Carolina at No. 20 Missouri: Mizzou has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season, boasting a 6-1 record after a recent victory against Kentucky. Meanwhile, South Carolina has struggled to maintain consistent wins. Last week, they came close to an upset against Florida but fell short, losing 41-39. Although the Gamecocks can be effective offensively, their defense leaves much to be desired. I believe Missouri has the potential to double this spread. Prediction: Missouri -7.5

Minnesota at No. 24 Iowa (Over/Under 32.5): Iowa secured the top spot in the Big Ten West with a hard-fought victory over Wisconsin last Saturday. The Hawkeyes play a gritty and effective brand of football. On the other hand, Minnesota, much like the rest of the Big Ten West, leans more towards the ugly side of the spectrum than the effective one. The over/under line has been steadily dropping for Iowa games, with this week’s total set at 32.5, four points lower than the previous week after a low-scoring game between the Hawkeyes and Badgers. I’m not ready to abandon the Iowa under trend just yet. Prediction: Under 32.5

Surprise Game of the Week No. 14 Utah vs. No. 18 USC (-7) USC is coming off a disappointing outing against Notre Dame, plagued by five turnovers. This week, they return home but are up against the formidable Utah defense, one of the nation’s best. Although Utah might still be without quarterback Cam Rising, they’ve managed well without him this season. Should Utah emerge victorious, it would mark their fourth consecutive win against USC. Prediction: Utah +7

Other Contenders for the College Football Playoff No. 1 Georgia at Vanderbilt (O/U 57) Prediction: Under No. 7 Penn State at No. 3 Ohio State (O/U 47) Prediction: Under Duke at No. 4 Florida State (-17.5) Prediction: Duke Arizona State at No. 5 Washington (-28) Prediction: Washington UCF at No. 6 Oklahoma (-19.5) Prediction: Oklahoma No. 8 Texas at Houston (-22.5) Prediction: Texas Washington State at No. 9 Oregon (-20) Prediction: Washington State Virginia at No. 10 North Carolina (O/U 56) Prediction: Over No. 17 Tennessee at No. 11 Alabama (-7.5) Prediction: Alabama
