In central Florida, an 11-year-old boy has been taken into custody following a shooting incident involving two 13-year-olds after a dispute erupted during an American football practice.

Following a physical altercation, the young assailant retrieved a firearm from his mother’s vehicle and discharged a single round, according to police reports.

Both victims sustained injuries from the same bullet, with one being struck in the arm and the other in the torso, necessitating surgical intervention.

The 11-year-old boy is now facing charges of attempted second-degree murder.

It is likely that adults will also face legal consequences, as the firearm was not properly secured in a locked container, as stated by Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley.

During a press conference held on Tuesday morning, McKinley characterized the previous night’s incident at the Northwest Recreation Complex as deeply concerning, emphasizing that it is unacceptable for 11-year-olds to have access to firearms and attempt to resolve disputes using such means.

McKinley expressed his concern that similar incidents involving children gaining access to firearms were becoming alarmingly frequent, with their ages seemingly decreasing.

The circumstances leading up to the initial altercation during a Pop Warner football practice remain unclear. Pop Warner, named after a renowned college coach, is recognized as the nation’s premier youth football, cheerleading, and dance organization.

The altercation between the three individuals transitioned from the sports facility to the parking lot, culminating in the assailant retrieving the weapon from his mother’s vehicle, as recounted by McKinley. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene approximately four minutes after the incident, shortly after 8:20 PM local time.

The victim struck in the arm received treatment and was released from the hospital the same night, while the victim struck in the torso was in stable condition following surgery.

For legal reasons, the identities of the victims and the young assailant have not been disclosed.
