The US Open will become a 15-day tournament in 2025, which begins for the first time in the open era.
This year’s main draw at Flushing Meadows will start on Sunday, August 24 and will end on Sunday, September 7.
It becomes the last Grand Slam to announce the Sunday start. In 2024, the Australian Open was expanded to a 15-day tournament when the French Open was taken in 2006.
This is left by Wimbledon as the only remaining Slam event that retains its traditional Monday.
When making a US change, Open said that this step would allow “more fan access than ever to the main draw after three consecutive years of record participation”.
The tournament estimates that the extension will allow access to another 70,000 spectators.
Men’s and female singles of the first round of matches will be played during the opening of three days in New York from Sunday to Tuesday.
Australian Open has taken the decision become a 15-day event in an effort to reduce the number of ends late in Melbourne Park.
