South African police said that Muhsin Hendrix, who is considered to be the world’s first transparent homosexual Imam, was shot dead on Saturday near the southern city of Queberha.
Police said the Imam held a mosque, which was considered a safe haven for homosexuals and other marginalized Muslims, and when a vehicle was in a car with another man, a vehicle prevented them from standing in front of them.
“Two suspects unknown with closed faces got off the vehicle and started shooting many scenes in the vehicle,” the East Cape Force said in a statement.
“Then they fled the scene. The driver noticed the shooting of Hendrix, who was sitting on the back of the vehicle.”
A police spokesman confirmed the credibility of a video on social media, which was said to be a murder in Bethrub, near Kigeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth.
“The purpose of the murder is unknown and it is part of the ongoing investigation,” police said.
The International Lesbian, K, Bisexual, Trans and InterSex Association condemned the murder.
“The Ilka world family is in deep shock in the news of Muhsin Hendricks’s murder, and calls on the authorities to investigate the fear that it may be a hateful crime,” Managing Director Julia EHRT said in a statement.
Hendrix, who is involved in various LGP lawyers, emerged as a homosexual in 1996. He ran the al-Kurba mosque in Wizberg near his birth Cape Town.
The mosque says, “It provides a safe place, in which bizarre Muslims and marginalized women can practice Islam,” says its website.
Hendricks of the 2022 documentary, called “The Radical”, noted before the threats against him.
But he emphasized that “the need to be genuine” is “larger than the fear of death.”
According to police data, South Africa is one of the world’s highest murder rates, and there are about 28,000 killings in February 2024.
